Dobromyl Castle
Ukraine, Ukraine
Dobromyl Castle, also known as Herburt Castle, in Dobromyl, Ukraine, began as a wooden fortress around 1450 built by Lviv architect Mykhailo Herburt on Blind Mountain to defend against invasions, but it burned down in a 1497 Tatar raid.
The Herburts later constructed a stone High Castle distant from the town and a Low Castle nearer the center in the 16th-17th centuries, introducing innovative brick bastions, beluards, and an artistically designed main entrance as part of Dobromyl's urban development after receiving Magdeburg rights in 1566.
These fortifications reflected Renaissance defensive architecture in the Sambir district amid Polish Kingdom rule, though both sites now exist primarily as ruins integrated into the town's historical landscape near Stryi River valleys.
