Doonbeg Castle is a 16th-century tower house located in the village of Doonbeg on Ireland’s Atlantic coast in County Clare.
Built by local Gaelic nobles associated with the MacMahon and O’Brien clans, it served as a fortified residence and helped protect the nearby harbor and surrounding lands. The castle was involved in regional conflicts during the late 16th century, changing hands between rival clans and surviving several sieges.
Although it eventually fell into decline, parts of the structure remained inhabited well into the 20th century, long after its military importance had ended. Today, Doonbeg Castle stands as an impressive ruin overlooking the coast and the Doonbeg River. Its surviving stone walls and historic setting offer visitors a glimpse into medieval life and the turbulent history of County Clare.
