Dubno Castle
Dubno, Ukraine, Ukraine
Dubno Castle in Dubno, Ukraine, originated in the early 15th century as a wooden fortress on the Ikva River, rebuilt in stone around 1492 by Prince Konstanty Ostrozky as a rectangular bastioned stronghold with thick walls, four towers, and a moat to defend Volhynia against Tatar invasions.
Expanded by the Ostrozky family into a Renaissance palace-fortress with Italian-style gates and a grand Lubomirski Palace added in the 17th century, it endured sieges during the Khmelnytsky Uprising and later served Polish kings like Władysław IV Vasa while hosting courts and archives.
Transitioning from military outpost to noble residence under the Zasławski and Lubomirski families, it suffered damage in World Wars and Soviet neglect before becoming a historical-cultural reserve in 1993, preserving Italian courtyards, baroque elements, and panoramic views as a key site in Rivne Oblast.
