Dyrhólaey is a small, rugged promontory on the south coast of Iceland, located not far from the village of Vík and rising about 120 meters above the Atlantic, where it juts out from the Skeiðflötur region into the ocean. Its name means “door hill island,” inspired by a large natural sea arch carved through the basalt cliffs that once allowed boats to pass through, and the headland itself is thought to have formed in an underwater volcanic eruption at the end of the last ice age. The area is a protected nature reserve with dramatic black‑sand cliffs, offshore sea stacks, and rich birdlife, including puffins that nest here in summer, and it offers sweeping views over Reynisfjara beach, the ocean, and even distant glaciers like Mýrdalsjökull. A small road and parking area let visitors get close to the lighthouse and viewpoints, though part of the higher area may be closed during nesting season to protect wildlife, making Dyrhólaey both a dramatic photographic spot and an important coastal habitat.
