Echizen Ono Castle is a historic hilltop castle in Ōno, Fukui Prefecture, often called the “Castle in the Sky” because it can appear to float above a sea of fog on autumn mornings.

Originally built in 1575 by Kanamori Nagachika, the castle served as an important regional stronghold during the late Sengoku and early Edo periods. The original castle was dismantled in the Meiji era, but the current keep was reconstructed in 1968 based on historical records and illustrations.

Perched on Mount Kameyama above the town, it offers impressive views of the surrounding basin and mountains. Today, Echizen Ono Castle is one of Fukui’s most popular landmarks, attracting visitors with its striking scenery, historical significance, and picturesque appearance when surrounded by clouds and mist.
