Edo Castle Ruins
Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan, Japan
Edo Castle Ruins, located in Tokyo’s Chiyoda district, are the remains of the castle that served as the political and military center of Japan under the Tokugawa shogunate for more than 260 years.
Originally built in 1457 and greatly expanded after Tokugawa Ieyasu established his rule, it became one of the largest and most important castle complexes in Japanese history. Although the main keep was destroyed by fire in 1657 and never rebuilt, many impressive features survive, including massive stone walls, moats, gates, watchtowers, and the foundation of the former castle tower.
Much of the site now forms part of the Imperial Palace grounds and the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace. Today, the ruins are a major historical attraction where visitors can explore the remains of Japan’s former seat of power while enjoying landscaped gardens in the heart of modern Tokyo. The site offers a unique link between the country’s feudal past and its present-day capital.
