El Toro Trail
Benítez, Canóvanas, Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico
El Toro Trail is a strenuous hiking route in the El Toro Wilderness within El Yunque National Forest, starting near the village of Benítez in Canóvanas, Puerto Rico.
The trail climbs about 2.3 miles (3.8 km) one‑way with roughly 1,325 feet of elevation gain, leading to the summit of El Toro Peak, the highest point in the Luquillo Mountains at 3,524 feet above sea level.
The path is rocky, often muddy, and partly overgrown, making it one of the most challenging and least‑visited trails in the national forest, typically taking around three hours to reach the top and a bit less to descend.
From the summit, hikers are rewarded with an expansive 360‑degree view that can include both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea on either side of the island, plus dense tropical‑forest scenery and the chance to see rare birds and other wildlife of this protected wilderness area.
