Elbow Reef Lighthouse
Abaco Islands, Bahamas
Elbow Reef Lighthouse, situated on Elbow Cay in Hope Town on the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas, is a striking red-and-white candy-striped tower built in 1863 by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service to guide ships past dangerous reefs.
Standing 89 feet tall with 101 steps leading to its first-order Fresnel lens, it remains one of the world's last operational kerosene-burning lighthouses, hand-wound nightly by keepers and emitting five white flashes every 15 seconds visible for 23 nautical miles.
Despite local wreckers' sabotage during construction, it has endured hurricanes like Dorian in 2019, now preserved by the Elbow Reef Lighthouse Society with public access to grounds, keepers' quarters, and a gift shop, offering panoramic views and a symbol of Bahamian maritime heritage featured on the $10 bill.
