Ferns Castle is a major medieval fortress located in the historic town of Ferns, County Wexford.

It was built around the early 13th century by William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, on a site that had previously been the power base of Diarmait Mac Murchada, the King of Leinster. Originally designed as a large Norman castle with four corner towers surrounding a central courtyard, only part of the structure survives today. Even so, its impressive towers, vaulted basement, original fireplaces, and rare circular chapel provide a vivid glimpse into medieval life and military architecture.

Throughout its history, the castle changed hands several times during conflicts between Norman and Irish forces and later came under the control of various noble families. Today, Ferns Castle is a protected heritage site and one of County Wexford’s most important historic landmarks, attracting visitors interested in Ireland’s Norman past and offering excellent views of the surrounding countryside.
