Fortaleza de Valença
Valença, Portugal, Portugal
The Fortaleza de Valença is a grand 17th-18th century bastioned fortress enclosing the historic town of Valença in Portugal, perched on hills overlooking the Minho River border with Spain.
Originating from 13th-century medieval walls under King Afonso III around 1262 to secure the northern frontier and river crossing, it was radically rebuilt starting in 1640 amid the Restoration Wars against Spain, with designs by French engineer Miguel de l'École from 1661, incorporating two polygonal areas—the northern medieval nucleus and southern "Coroada" military zone—linked by gates, moats, bridges, nine bastions, and ravelins for optimal fire coverage.
Completed in 1713 by Manuel Pinto de Vilalobos after resisting Spanish assaults in 1643 and 1654 (briefly lost then retaken), it endured the Peninsular and Liberal Wars before becoming a National Monument, today walkable for panoramic views amid shops and cafés.
