Forte de Paçô / Forte de Montedor
Carreço, Portugal, Portugal
Forte de Paçô, also known as Forte de Montedor, is a small 17th-century coastal fort perched on a rocky outcrop by Paçô Beach (Praia dos Ingleses) in Carreço parish, Viana do Castelo district, northern Portugal.
Built after the War of Restoration (1640-1668) as one of four similar forts between Caminha and Viana—including Areosa, Cão, and Lagarteira—to bolster Atlantic defenses against Spanish or pirate threats, it features a star-shaped plan with talus walls, redents, a barbete battery, and remnants of guard posts.
Deactivated by 1716, it was ceded for tourism in 1984 and classified as a National Monument in 1967, now serving as a historical landmark amid permeable coastal terrain.
