Fortetsya Svyatoyi Triytsi
Ukraine, Ukraine
Fortetsya Svyatoyi Triytsi, or Holy Trinity Fortress, in Okopy, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine, was constructed in 1692 by Polish Hetman Stanisław Jan Jabłonowski to a design by Tylman van Gameren as a bastioned stronghold at the Zbruch and Dniester rivers' confluence, blocking Ottoman supply lines from Kamianets-Podilskyi to Moldavia.
This star-shaped complex featured western and eastern fortified lines with half-bastions, ravelins, Lvivska and Kamianetska Gates, housing around 4,000 soldiers and 18 cannons under commanders like Marcin Kątski, garrisoned with infantry, dragoons, and Polish cavalry flags amid harsh service conditions.
It lost military role after the 1699 Treaty of Karlowitz, hosted Casimir Pulaski's 1769 Bar Confederation defense against Russians, and evolved into a settlement with town privileges, now preserved as national ruins symbolizing Podilia's border defenses.
