The Fortress of Monção in Monção, Portugal, guards the Minho River border with Spain, originating as a medieval castle likely under Sancho I in the late 12th century, expanded by Afonso III after 1258 and Dinis around 1306 with Gothic walls, a circular layout, and a prominent keep tower.

It withstood Castilian sieges in 1369 and 1385, gaining a protective armor under João I in the 15th century amid independence struggles. Modernized in 1656 during the Restoration Wars by French engineer Miguel de L'École into a Vauban-style bastioned fortress with nine bastions and five gates—including monumental entrances with national arms—it heroically resisted Spanish assaults from 1658-1659 before declining post-19th century, now a National Monument since 1910 offering panoramic views.
