Freedom Monument
Riga, Latvia
The Freedom Monument is one of the most important national symbols of Latvia, located in the center of Riga.
Unveiled in 1935, it was built to honor those who fought and died in the Latvian War of Independence and represents the country's freedom, independence, and sovereignty. Standing about 42 meters tall, the monument is crowned by a copper statue known as “Milda,” a woman holding three golden stars that symbolize Latvia’s historic regions and their unity.
Its base is decorated with numerous sculptures and reliefs depicting important events, cultural traditions, and values from Latvian history. Throughout the Soviet era, the monument remained a powerful symbol of national identity and hope for independence. Today, it serves as a focal point for official ceremonies, commemorations, and public gatherings, making it one of the most beloved and recognizable landmarks in Latvia.
