Fukuchiyama Castle
Kyoto, Japan
Fukuchiyama Castle in Kyoto, Japan, was originally built in 1579 by Akechi Mitsuhide on the site of an older fortress of the Yokoyama clan. As a strategic hilltop castle, it played a key role in Mitsuhide’s efforts to control the Tanba region during Japan’s Sengoku period.
The castle featured a three-layered, four-story main keep, stone walls, gates, and turrets, reflecting the architectural style and defensive needs of that era. Although the original structures were mostly dismantled in 1872 during the Meiji Restoration, the main keep was reconstructed in 1986 and now houses the Fukuchiyama City Folk Museum.
The castle grounds offer scenic views over the Yura River and the surrounding town, and nearby is the Sato Taisei Memorial Art Museum, dedicated to a local Japanese painter. Fukuchiyama Castle remains a symbol of the region’s historical significance and samurai heritage.
