Verified Fukui Castle Ruins

Fukui, Japan, Japan

Fukui Castle Ruins are the remains of a large Edo-period castle located in the center of Fukui City.

The castle was built in 1606 by Yūki Hideyasu, the second son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and served as the seat of the powerful Echizen Matsudaira clan for more than 260 years. Most of the castle buildings were lost after the Meiji Restoration and through later disasters, but substantial stone walls, moats, gates, and other reconstructed features remain.

The site is particularly known for its impressive fortifications and the historic well believed to have inspired the name “Fukui.” Today, the ruins surround the Fukui Prefectural Office and form an accessible historical landmark in the heart of the city. Visitors can walk around the preserved moats and stonework while learning about the castle’s role as an important political center of the region.
