Verified Fukuoka Castle Ruins

Fukuoka, Japan

Fukuoka Castle Ruins in Fukuoka, Japan, were originally constructed between 1601 and 1607 by Kuroda Nagamasa, the first lord of the Fukuoka Domain.

The castle was the largest in the Kyushu region, featuring an extensive complex with numerous turrets known as yagura, and massive stone walls made from stones repurposed from dismantled nearby castles and ancient defense structures.

Its design included well-planned moats, defensive mounds, and multiple baileys such as hon-maru, ni-no-maru, and san-no-maru, arranged for strong defense using advanced stone wall techniques. Although the main keep (tenshu) is debated to have possibly existed, the foundations suggest a fortified central area with strong defensive structures.

Many original parts of the castle were dismantled during the Meiji Restoration, with only a few turrets remaining today. The ruins, including stone walls, moats, and foundations, are preserved within Maizuru Park, providing visitors insight into the castle’s former grandeur and its role as a significant political and military center in Edo-period Japan.
