Fukuyama Castle
Fukuyama, Japan
Fukuyama Castle, located in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, was constructed between 1619 and 1622 by Mizuno Katsunari, a cousin of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Built on a strategic hill facing the Seto Inland Sea, it functioned as a key transportation and defense hub. The castle featured a five-story main keep clad in iron plates on its north side, multiple turrets, tall stone walls, and water moats connected to the sea by canals.
The Mizuno clan ruled the castle until 1699, after which the Abe clan governed the domain until the Meiji Restoration. The castle was partially demolished in the late 19th century, and its main keep was destroyed during World War II air raids. In 1966, the main keep was reconstructed with modern materials and now houses a museum showcasing the castle and city history.
The castle grounds serve as a public park, popular especially during cherry blossom season, and underwent renovations in 2022 to celebrate its 400th anniversary.
