Verified Gassantoda Castle Ruins

Yasugi, Japan

Gassantoda Castle Ruins are located in Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture, Japan, and date back to the late 12th century, originally built in the Heian or early Kamakura period. The castle, also known as Gassan Toda Castle, was a mountain fortress that utilized the natural ridges and valleys of Mount Gassan, making it one of the largest and most impregnable medieval castles in Japan.

It served as the stronghold of the Amago clan for over a century during the Sengoku period, resisting multiple sieges until it was finally captured by the Mōri clan in 1566. The castle was strategically important for controlling the San'in region and was later occupied by various ruling clans until it was abandoned in 1611 when the seat of power moved to Matsue Castle.

The ruins today remain well-preserved and are a designated National Historic Site, with remnants including stone walls, moats, and terraces reflecting its historical and military significance in Japanese history.
