Gaujiena Castle is a medieval castle ruin in northern Latvia, located near the Gauja River in the historic region of Vidzeme.

The castle was established by the Livonian Order in the 13th century and served as an important administrative and military center on key trade and travel routes between Livonia and Pskov. Over the centuries, the castle was involved in numerous conflicts, including the Livonian War, the Polish-Swedish wars, and the Great Northern War. 

It changed hands several times between Russian, Polish-Lithuanian, and Swedish forces before being severely damaged in 1702 and eventually abandoned. Today, the remaining ruins offer a glimpse into Latvia’s medieval past. Surrounded by scenic countryside, the site is valued for its historical significance and the remnants of its defensive walls and towers, which reflect centuries of political and military struggle in the Baltic region.
