Gaziantep Castle
Gaziantep, Türkiye, Turkey
Gaziantep Castle rises prominently on a hill in central Gaziantep, southeastern Turkey, with origins as a Hittite observation post over 6,000 years ago, later expanded by Romans in the 2nd-3rd centuries AD and Justinian I in the 6th century into a circular fortress spanning 1,200 meters with 12 bastions.
Repaired by Byzantines, Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans—including major work by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1557—it featured thick stone walls, a moat, bridge, and inner galleries for defense during sieges like the Turkish War of Independence.
Severely damaged by 2023 earthquakes with collapsed bastions, ongoing restoration aims for reopening, once housing a museum on local heroism amid panoramic city views.
