Genoese Fortress
Feodosia, Ukraine
Genoese Fortress in Feodosia (ancient Kaffa), Ukraine, was constructed in the 14th century by Genoese merchants as a massive citadel on the Black Sea coast, featuring two defensive lines with 718-meter walls up to 11 meters high, over 30 towers, and a fortified inner citadel to safeguard lucrative trade in spices, silks, and slaves from Tatar and rival Venetian threats.
Established after Genoa acquired the site in 1266 from the Golden Horde, it became Europe's second-largest fortress after Thessaloniki, housing an administrative center, consular palace, and diverse multicultural population amid booming commerce.
Infamously linked to the 1346 Black Death outbreak when besieging Tatar forces catapulted plague-ridden corpses over the walls, prompting Genoese flight that spread the epidemic across Europe, it fell to Ottoman conquest in 1475, with remnants like the St. Clement and Crisco Towers preserved today as a historical reserve.
