Genuezskaya Krepost' Chembalo
Sevastopol, Ukraine
Genuezskaya Krepost' Chembalo, or Cembalo Genoese Fortress, overlooks Balaklava Bay near Sevastopol in Crimea, Ukraine, built by Genoese merchants starting in 1343 on Kastros Mountain to control Black Sea trade routes and defend against invasions from the Golden Horde and later rivals.
Divided into Upper City (administrative citadel with towers) and Lower City (three-walled residential area with donjon tower added in the 1460s), it withstood sieges by Principality of Theodoro forces in 1423 and 1433 before Ottoman conquest in 1475, who renamed it Balak Hisar or "Fish Nest."
These well-preserved ruins, featuring medieval walls, gates, and panoramic bay views, endured Crimean War damage and World War II bombings, now serving as a key archaeological site symbolizing Crimean Genoa's commercial empire.
