Görgény Fortress
Gurghiu, Romania, Romania
Görgény Fortress in Gurghiu, Romania, dates to the mid-14th century as a key stronghold first mentioned in 1358, serving as the seat of the Székely Lord Lieutenant and guarding a vast domain against invasions. Built with river stones on Dealul Cetății hill in an irregular rectangular shape protected by six original bastions like Kapu, Harcsafark, and Patak, it saw reinforcements in the 1630s under Prince György Rákóczi I before construction shifted to a princely manor below in 1642. Damaged during Rákóczi's 1703-1711 War of Independence and later abandoned as its strategic role faded, the hilltop ruins now offer hiking access overlooking the valley and nearby Rákóczi-Bornemisza castle complex.
