Greencastle is a medieval fortress that stands at the entrance to Carlingford Lough on Ireland’s northeast coast.

Built mainly in the 13th century, it was strategically positioned to control the narrow waterway and ferry route between County Down and Carlingford, making it an important defensive stronghold for centuries. The castle is believed to have been constructed by Hugh de Lacy and later served as a residence and military garrison.

Over the years it was attacked, captured, and rebuilt several times, including during conflicts involving Edward Bruce and later Irish and English forces. Today, the ruins remain an impressive landmark overlooking Carlingford Lough. Visitors are drawn by its dramatic coastal setting, extensive medieval remains, and the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and shoreline, which highlight its historical importance and scenic appeal.
