Gushikawa Castle is a historic Ryukyuan fortress located on coastal cliffs in Itoman, at the southern tip of Okinawa Island.

Surrounded by the sea on three sides, the castle used the natural landscape as a strong defense, offering wide views of the surrounding ocean. The castle is believed to date from around the 12th to 15th centuries and is associated with legends of a local lord who fled from Kume Island and established a new stronghold here.

Archaeological discoveries, including Chinese ceramics, suggest the site was connected to regional trade and activity during the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Today, Gushikawa Castle survives as a National Historic Site known for its stone walls, cliffside setting, and scenic ocean views. The ruins provide visitors with a glimpse into Okinawa’s medieval history and the unique architectural style of Ryukyuan castles.
