Gushikawa Castle Ruins
Kumejima, Japan, Japan
Gushikawa Castle Ruins are the remains of a Ryukyuan gusuku fortress located on Kumejima Island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.
Built by the early 15th century on a limestone hill overlooking the East China Sea, the castle occupied a naturally defensive position surrounded by steep cliffs on three sides. The fortress played an important role during the era when local rulers controlled different parts of the Ryukyu Islands.
Historical records associate it with regional lords known as Aji, and the castle was eventually destroyed during the consolidation of power by the Ryukyu Kingdom in the early 16th century. Today, visitors can explore the stone ruins, defensive enclosures, and scenic viewpoints that overlook the ocean. Recognized as a National Historic Site since 1975, Gushikawa Castle Ruins are valued for their cultural significance and their connection to the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
