Hachiōji Castle Ruins
Hachioji, Japan, Japan
Hachiōji Castle Ruins are the remains of a major mountain fortress in western Tokyo, built in the late 16th century by Hōjō Ujiteru of the powerful Late Hōjō clan.
Positioned on Mount Fukasawayama, the castle was designed to control important routes into the Kantō region and used the surrounding mountains, moats, and ramparts as natural defenses. The castle played a significant role during Japan’s Sengoku, or Warring States, period. In 1590, it was attacked and captured by forces loyal to Toyotomi Hideyoshi during his campaign to unify Japan, an event that contributed to the downfall of the Hōjō clan.
Shortly afterward, the castle was abandoned. Today, the site is a National Historic Site and one of Japan’s most important castle ruins. Visitors can explore restored stone walls, gates, palace remains, and forested hiking trails while learning about the dramatic history of feudal Japan and enjoying scenic views of the surrounding area.
