Haller Castle
Sânpaul, Mureș, Romania, Romania
Haller Castle in Sânpaul, Mureș County, Romania, originated from a 16th-century fortress owned by Ferenc Alárdi, destroyed in 1575 during the Battle of Sânpaul, with a new L-shaped Renaissance structure begun in 1610 by István Haller and completed in 1674 by his son János, featuring defensive walls and octagonal towers. Damaged during Rákóczi's War of Independence, it was rebuilt in Baroque style during the 1770s-1780s by Count Gábor Haller IV into a U-shaped mansion with arcaded courtyards, comparable to Gödöllő's Grassalkovich Palace, surrounded by gardens, a glasshouse, and stables. Nationalized after 1945 and used for housing, schools, and storage, the Haller family continuously owned it for 339 years until restitution challenges left it in partial ruin, steeped in local legends of curses.
