Hălmagiu is a commune in Arad County, western Romania, located in the Hălmagiu Basin at the confluence of the Hălmăgel and Crișul Alb rivers near the Bihor Mountains' foothills, comprising eleven villages including Bănești, Bodești, Brusturi, Cristești, Ionești, Leasa, Leștioara, Poienari, Țărmure, and Tisa, with a population around 2,300 as of recent censuses.

First documented in 1390 as the residence of voivode Moga, it features medieval remnants like traces of a 15th-century bezant church, a 16th-century fortress destroyed in 1706 during anti-Habsburg uprisings, and a post-house inn called Birtul Mare from the late 18th century later used by revolutionary Avram Iancu.

The area holds historical significance with 1440's princely Orthodox church "Adormirea Maicii Domnului" boasting 15th-century frescoes, monuments to Avram Iancu and local heroes, and ties to 1784 peasant revolts led by Horia, Cloșca, and Crișan, alongside 1863 Romanian language adoption and 1918 union efforts.
