Halych Castle
Halych, Ukraine, Ukraine
Halych Castle in Halych, Ukraine, began as a wooden fortified citadel in the early 12th century during the Principality of Halych-Volhynia era, later rebuilt in stone by Polish King Casimir III the Great in the mid-14th century on a strategic hill overlooking the Dniester River to defend Poland's borders against invasions.
Expanded through the 16th-17th centuries with towers, bastions, gates, a starost palace, and St. Catherine's Chapel under nobles like the Sieniawski and Potocki families, it hosted courts, Sejms, and archives while enduring sieges by Cossacks, Tatars, and Turks, including a devastating 1676 Ottoman capture.
Now part of the Ancient Halych National Reserve, the ruins preserve walls, the Noble Tower, and remnants of Renaissance fortifications amid ongoing excavations, symbolizing Galicia's medieval power center near the ruins of the 12th-century Dormition Cathedral.
