Hatch's Castle
Ardee, Ireland, Ireland
Hatch’s Castle is a medieval fortified town house located on Market Street in Ardee, County Louth.
Dating from the late 14th or 15th century, it is one of only two surviving fortified urban houses in the town and represents a type of building that was once common in medieval Irish towns. The castle is easily recognized by its unusual rounded corners, four-storey structure, battlements, and projecting stair turret.
Built as both a residence and a defensive stronghold, it reflects the need for protection in medieval Ardee, an important frontier town within the English-controlled Pale. Over the centuries, the building was modernized and adapted for residential use, but it remains inhabited today. Despite these changes, Hatch’s Castle continues to be an important historic landmark and a rare example of a medieval urban fortified house in Ireland.
