Herrevads Monestary
Ljungbyhed, Sweden, Sweden
Herrevads Monastery, located near Ljungbyhed in Scania, Sweden, was founded in 1144 as Denmark's first Cistercian abbey by Archbishop Eskil of Lund on the Rönne River ford, originally named Herivad or "army ford" before becoming Herrevad or "Lord's ford."
The abbey grew into one of Scandinavia's largest and wealthiest monastic houses with a Romanesque sandstone church started in 1158, later rebuilt in expansive Brick Gothic style after a 1291 fire, featuring a 53-meter-long structure second only to Lund Cathedral, plus dormitories, refectories, and a scriptorium possibly linked to the Codex Runicus.
Dissolved during the 1536 Reformation yet allowed to function secularly until 1565, it hosted Tycho Brahe's early paper mill and glassworks before Danish-Swedish wars led to demolition in 1709-1710, with remnants repurposed into Herrevad Castle, an Empire-style military residence from 1727 now privately owned and under restoration.
