Hiji Castle Ruins
Hiji, Japan
Hiji Castle Ruins in Hiji, Japan, date back to 1602 when the castle was built by Kinoshita Nobutoshi, the first lord of the Hiji Domain, after the Battle of Sekigahara. The castle was designed with multiple defensive layers including a main tower, turrets, stone walls, and dry moats, situated strategically on a coastal terrace overlooking Beppu Bay.
Much of the original castle was dismantled in 1874, but some structures like the Sumi-yagura watchtower were restored in recent years. The site is now a peaceful castle park with remnants of its stone bases and moats, hosting an elementary school inside the castle grounds.
The castle town around it retains historical significance with statues commemorating important local figures, and the surrounding views of the bay and mountains are renowned for their beauty.
