Himeji Castle in Himeji, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, is a stunning example of early 17th-century Japanese castle architecture and one of the most well-preserved samurai fortifications in the country. Originally built as a fort in 1333, it was expanded and remodeled multiple times, with the most significant reconstruction occurring between 1601 and 1609 under the feudal lord Ikeda Terumasa, who gave the castle its iconic five-story main keep.

The castle complex comprises 83 buildings, including gates, turrets, and corridors, surrounded by defensive walls and moats designed for strong protection against attackers. Its white plastered walls, fire-resistant and visually striking, earned it the nickname "White Heron Castle" due to its resemblance to a bird with spread wings.

Himeji Castle has survived wars, natural disasters, and extensive restoration efforts, and it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, symbolizing architectural beauty, feudal power, and historic resilience.
