Île aux Aigrettes

Île aux Aigrettes is a small coral limestone island off the southeast coast of Mauritius near Mahebourg, covering about 27 hectares.

It is a protected nature reserve and scientific research station dedicated to conserving the last remnants of the unique Mauritius dry coastal forest, which once covered much of the island. The reserve is home to many rare and endangered native species, including the Pink Pigeon, the Mauritius Kestrel, giant Aldabra tortoises, and various endemic plants.

The island had faced severe ecological damage from human activity and invasive species, but since being declared a nature reserve in 1965, ongoing restoration by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation has revived its natural habitat. Visitors can take guided tours to explore the unique flora and fauna and experience a glimpse of Mauritius’s original natural environment. The island also has historical remnants from World War II when it was used as a military base.
