Iwamura Castle Ruins
Ena, Japan, Japan
Iwamura Castle Ruins in Ena, Japan, stand on top of a 717-meter mountain, making it historically the highest geographic castle in Japan.
Built around 1185 by Kato Kagekado, it earned the nickname "Misty Castle" due to the frequent fog that would cloak the mountain and help conceal it from enemies. The castle witnessed over 700 years of history, including intense battles among warlords such as Takeda Shingen, Oda Nobunaga, and Tokugawa Ieyasu during the Sengoku period.
Notably, Lady Otsuya, Oda Nobunaga’s aunt, ruled the castle as a female lord and fiercely defended it during a prolonged siege. After her surrender under false promises, she was executed by Nobunaga, an event still remembered for its bravery and tragedy. The castle was dismantled in 1873 during the Meiji Restoration, with only stone foundations and some restored turrets remaining today.
The surrounding castle town reflects centuries of history with preserved samurai residences and a museum, making it a significant cultural site and one of Japan’s top 100 castles.
