Jabal Haraz is a mountainous region located west of Sana'a in Yemen, celebrated for its striking natural beauty, terraced hillsides, and unique stone villages perched on rugged peaks. The area lies between the capital Sana'a and Al-Hudaydah, forming part of the Sarat mountain range, and has been both a historic stronghold and a center of strategic importance for centuries.

In the 11th century, Jabal Haraz served as the stronghold of the Sulaihid dynasty, and many of their impressive stone buildings and fortified villages still survive today, with architecture built from sandstone and basalt that often blends seamlessly into the rocky landscape. The villages are usually designed for both defense and agriculture, with houses forming the outer walls and only a few easily guarded entrances.

Jabal Haraz is also known for its distinctive agricultural terraces, where locals grow crops such as alfalfa, millet, lentils, coffee, and qat. The region is particularly famous for producing high-quality coffee beans, often referred to as Mocha coffee. At the heart of Jabal Haraz is the town of Manakhah, which acts as a main marketplace and gathering point for villagers in the surrounding mountains.

Other well-known villages like Al Hajjara, Bayt al-Qamus, and Hutaib are noted for their historical sites and panoramic views. The area’s residents, traditionally Isma'ili Shi'a Muslims, have preserved a way of life that reflects both the cultural and natural richness of Yemen. With its combination of dramatic scenery, historic architecture, and traditional agriculture, Jabal Haraz offers a rare glimpse into Yemen’s mountainous heritage and remains an outstanding example of the region’s enduring connection between people and their environment.
