Kabul
Kabul, Kabul Province, Afghanistan
Kabul is the capital and largest city of Afghanistan. It is located in the eastern part of the country in a high valley surrounded by the mountains of the Hindu Kush. Kabul sits at about 1,790 meters (5,870 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest capitals in the world. The Kabul River flows through the center of the city, dividing old neighborhoods from newer parts.
Kabul is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, with a history stretching back more than 3,500 years. It has long been an important location because it sits on major trade routes between Central and South Asia, including the old Silk Road. Over the centuries, Kabul has been ruled by different empires, such as the Mauryans, Kushans, and Mughals. In the 16th century, it was the summer capital of the Mughal Empire. In 1776, it became the capital of the Afghan Empire under Timur Shah Durrani.
The city is known for its rich culture and mix of people. Kabul is home to different ethnic groups, including Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks, and others. Most people follow Islam, but there are also small Sikh and Hindu communities. Kabul’s old bazaars remain lively, selling local goods such as rugs, dried fruits, and traditional crafts. The city has famous landmarks, like the Gardens of Babur, Darul Aman Palace, and various mosques and palaces.
In the 20th century, Kabul was known for its open, cultural atmosphere and was sometimes called the “Paris of Central Asia.” However, long periods of war and conflict have deeply changed the city. Since 1978, Kabul has faced a revolution, foreign invasions, civil wars, and bombings, which destroyed parts of the city and made life difficult for its people. The city was under Taliban rule in the late 1990s and early 2000s, then changed hands several times since. In 2021, the Taliban returned to power after the withdrawal of international forces.
Kabul’s economy is centered around trade, services, and small industry. Bazaars and markets play a key role, and agriculture in the areas around the city also supports the local food supply. Over the last few decades, international aid and new businesses have helped parts of the city to grow again. However, many people still struggle with unemployment and poverty, and the city faces challenges with infrastructure and security.
