Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park
Kakabeka Falls, Ontario, Canada, Canada
Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park is a 500-hectare natural environment park in northwestern Ontario, located about 30 kilometers west of Thunder Bay along Highway 11/17, and it was established in 1955 to protect the majestic Kakabeka Falls, often called the “Niagara of the North.”
The falls themselves plunge 40 meters (131 feet) over billion-year-old Precambrian cliffs into the Kaministiquia River, making them the second-highest waterfall in Ontario after Niagara Falls. The park offers year-round day use with a boardwalk that wraps around the top of the falls for excellent views of the waterfall and gorge, plus five hiking trails ranging from easy to strenuous that wind through forests and wetlands where visitors can observe diverse wildlife.
During summer, there are three campgrounds—Whispering Hills with electrical sites for RVs, Riverside near the river, and Fern’s Edge for secluded rustic camping—along with yurts available for non-traditional camping, while winter brings popular cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on groomed trails. The area holds significant historical importance as part of the ancient Kaministiquia fur trade route used by Indigenous peoples and European Voyageurs, and the river has exposed 1.6-million-year-old fossils at the falls' base where endangered Lake Sturgeon still spawn.
