Verified Kalam Darchi Fort

Pakistan, Pakistan

Kalam Darchi Fort, also spelled Qalamdarchi or Qalandarchi Fort, is a historic British-built outpost in the Misgar Valley of Hunza District, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, located near the tri-border area of Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan.

The fort was constructed around 1932–1933 by British soldiers in the Hunza Valley to monitor movements and potential incursions from China and the USSR through the nearby Kilik, Mintika, and Dlesung mountain passes, which were part of the old Silk Road network. Its name “Kalam Darchi” is said to derive from “Qalandar Chi” or “Fort of the Naked Saint,” referring to a local wandering saint, and the structure originally served as a border guard post and later became a base for the Gilgit Scouts, the Northern Light Infantry, and the Pakistan Army.

Strategically positioned at the junction of three valleys, the fort overlooks the corridors that connect Misgar to China via Mintika and Kilik passes and to Afghanistan’s Wakhan corridor via Dlesung, making it one of the most remote and geopolitically significant forts in Pakistan. Over time, the fort was renovated and maintained by the Pakistan Army, used as a training school and military outpost, and in more recent years it has been restored to resemble its original British-era appearance and opened for public visitation during daylight hours, with ongoing work to convert parts of it into a museum displaying local culture and military history.
