Kamiizumi Castle
Maebashi, Japan, Japan
Kamiizumi Castle, located in what is now Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, was a Japanese castle from the early Sengoku period.
Although it is no longer standing, it is historically significant as the birthplace of Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, a renowned 16th-century samurai and swordmaster who created the Shinkage-ryū school of combat. The castle was originally controlled by the Kamiizumi family, a branch of the Ōgo clan.
Throughout the turbulent Sengoku era, the castle changed hands as power struggles occurred, reflecting the region’s chaotic history. While the physical castle is now lost, Kamiizumi’s legacy endures through his martial contributions, and the site is remembered for its connection to this influential figure in Japanese swordsmanship history.
