Kaminokunidate (Katsuyamadate) Ruins
Hokkaido, Japan
The Kaminokunidate Ruins, also known as Katsuyamadate, are the remains of a mountain castle built in the late 15th century in Hokkaido, Japan. Excavations over more than 30 years have uncovered evidence of large-scale settlement and over 100,000 artifacts, including tools, buildings, wells, and bridges, revealing insights into life during Japan's medieval period. The ruins suggest that both Ainu and Japanese people coexisted in the area, which was a center of trade and cultural exchange.
The surrounding region is also known for its rich wildflower diversity, particularly the Ezo mountain azalea that blooms in early summer. The site includes a guidance center that offers information with models and videos about the castle's history and significance.
