Kan'onji Castle Ruins, also known as Kannonji Castle, are the remains of one of Japan’s largest mountain castles, located on Mount Kinugasa in Ōmihachiman, Shiga Prefecture.

Built by the Rokkaku clan during the medieval period, the castle occupied a strategic position overlooking key routes between Kyoto, eastern Japan, and the Sea of Japan. The fortress became an important political and military center during the Sengoku (Warring States) period and was notable for its advanced use of stone walls, which were uncommon in Japanese mountain castles of that era.

In 1568, Oda Nobunaga’s campaign against the Rokkaku clan led to the castle’s surrender and eventual decline. Today, visitors can explore the extensive ruins, including stone foundations, terraces, and defensive works scattered across the mountainside. The site is recognized as a National Historic Site and is valued for its historical importance, scenic views, and insight into the development of Japanese castle architecture.
