Karacahisar Kalesi
Turkey, Turkey
Karacahisar Kalesi is a Byzantine fortress on a plateau near the Porsuk River southwest of Eskişehir in Turkey, constructed in the 12th century as a strategic defense amid regional power struggles.
Captured by Osman Gazi in 1288 from local Byzantine or Germiyanid forces, Ottoman chronicles portray it as the empire's first conquest, where the first hutbe was read and coins minted in his name, marking a foundational milestone.
Featuring stone walls and a compact "kale kent" layout typical of Middle Byzantine military settlements, its ruins reflect layers of Seljuk and early Ottoman influence, now drawing history enthusiasts despite limited preservation.
