Karekare
New Zealand, New Zealand
Karekare is a small, secluded coastal settlement in West Auckland, New Zealand, nestled between the Waitākere Ranges and its iconic black-sand surf beach, located about 35 km west of Auckland city centre south of Piha.
Known as the filming location for Jane Campion's 1993 Oscar-winning film The Piano, it features powerful waves attracting surfers, nearby Karekare Falls, lush rainforest with kauri trees and native birds like tui and kereru, plus rock pools and historic Māori kūmara cultivation sites from Te Kawerau ā Maki iwi.
Home to around 300 residents amid ancient volcanic remnants like Te Matua peak, its wild, boisterous waters (Waikarekare) demand caution due to rips, offering dramatic hikes, solitude, and ever-changing moody seascapes.
