Karlberg Palace
Solna, Sweden, Sweden
Karlberg Palace, situated in Solna Municipality near Stockholm along the Karlberg Canal, originated in the 1630s when Lord High Admiral Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm unified three medieval villages into the estate and built a Renaissance-style structure with pink plaster and tall gables.
Expanded grandly in the late 17th century by Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie with architect Jean de la Vallée into an H-shaped Baroque palace featuring lavish interiors, French-style gardens, fountains, and an orangery, it later served King Charles XI as a royal residence before becoming the Swedish Military Academy's home in 1792 under Gustav III.
Extended in the 1790s by Carl Christoffer Gjörwell with elongated Neo-Classical wings and restored externally in the 1980s, the state-owned palace remains an active officer training facility managed by the Swedish Fortifications Agency, with its scenic 17th-18th century park open to the public.
