Katsuren Castle Ruins
Uruma, Japan, Japan
Katsuren Castle Ruins are the remains of a Ryukyuan fortress located in Uruma, Okinawa.
Built between the 13th and 14th centuries on a limestone hill overlooking the sea, the castle was an important political and trading center of the Ryukyu Islands and is often called the “Ocean Gusuku” because of its coastal position. The castle reached its peak under the ruler Amawari in the 15th century, when it prospered through international trade and became one of the most influential strongholds in the region.
Its distinctive curved stone walls and terraced enclosures showcase the unique architectural style of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Today, Katsuren Castle Ruins are a National Historic Site and part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.” Visitors come to explore its well-preserved stonework, learn about Okinawa’s history, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and ocean.
