Khust Castle
Khust, Ukraine, Ukraine
Khust Castle in Khust, Ukraine, perched on a volcanic mountain near the Rika and Tisza rivers' confluence, originated around 1090 as a wooden fortress under Hungarian King Ladislaus I to guard salt trade routes from Solotvyno mines and borderlands.
Rebuilt in stone by the 14th century amid Galicia-Volhynia Principality control (1281–1321), it expanded significantly in the 15th century with walls, towers, and defensive enhancements, serving as a Hungarian stronghold that withstood Tatar raids in 1242 and later housed prisoners while hosting key figures like voivode Yan Dralepskyi-Horvat.
Damaged through centuries of conflicts including Transylvanian uprisings and a 1766 powder explosion, it was abandoned by 1773 under Maria Theresa, leaving atmospheric ruins that symbolize Zakarpattia's medieval defenses and now attract hikers for panoramic Carpathian views.
