kiliya Fortress
Kilia, Ukraine, Ukraine
Kiliya Fortress in Kiliia, Ukraine, originated as a Greek outpost named Achillea in ancient times, later fortified by Byzantines and Genoese traders as Licostomo before Moldavian Prince Stephen the Great established it in the 15th century to counter Ottoman advances on the Danube River.
Captured by Sultan Bayezid II in 1484 after a siege by 60,000 troops, it served as a key Turkish stronghold in Bessarabia, changing hands amid Hungarian, Moldavian, and later Russian-Turkish conflicts until Russian forces took it in the late 18th century.
Today, scant remnants like tower bases on the Danube's left bank persist on private industrial land, evoking its role in medieval Black Sea trade and defenses near historic churches like 17th-century St. Nicholas amid the port town's multicultural past.
